What the hell is this?

What the hell is this?

This isn’t going to be heavy but I’ll be honest: being here in Costa Rica, I spend a LOT of my time thinking about the curious nature of life and death. At times, way more than I care to.

Less than 24 hours after I posted about the wonders of life in the almond tree, excited about seeing what I could find today, all of the lower branches (which housed most of the life I was photographing) were pruned and set into a pit to be burned.

All of the little creatures on those limbs have been displaced. Many will die.

I don’t think I’ve ever cared for the lives of six- and eight-legged creatures so much. Granted, I’m always aware that I probably trample about 100 insects a day just clomping around, but it just seems kinda sad with the tree. I raked the leaves underneath it today as well and made tons of little critters scatter in doing that.

The upside in all of this is that conditions are now absolutely perfect(!!!) for hanging a hammock between the almond tree and the mango tree! Plenty of space, plenty of light during the day, doesn’t feel like it’s closing in on me when I’m underneath it. It’s awesome!! I’m thinking of maybe even placing a little stand of some sort beside it to hold a beverage!

There are a good number of shops in Jacó that sell hammocks and I’ve been eyeballing them and checking prices for a while now, actually. So this is the week!

(Really sorry about the disruption and death, bugs. But most of you will be okay. Besides, the spiders, the birds, and the ctenosaurs were just going to eat you anyway. Circle of life, friends. Circle of life.)
